Vegetable Container Gardening – 5 Common Plants and Containers

By Kristy Martz

Vegetable container gardening is a great vegetable planting technique. Whether you have acres of land or a small apartment, it’s a way to control your vegetable planting and have easy access to healthy vegetables. Gardeners can purchase vegetable garden seeds especially bred to develop into small plants.
Here are just five of the many vegetables you can grow in containers.

Tomatoes are a favorite vegetable container gardening plant. These can be planted in bushel baskets or 5 gallon pots. You should only place one plant in each container. Some tomatoes can even be grown in hanging baskets.

-Green Beans

Green beans are another vegetable garden staple. You can plant 2 or 3 plants per gallon container. These plants will provide you with fresh green beans for salads or side dishes.

Beets can be grown in a 1 or 2 gallon container. Make sure you thin these vegetables out so they are about 2 inches apart. You can also grow beets in a window box with the same spacing.

Wouldn’t it be great to grab a few leave of fresh lettuce whenever you wanted a salad? Use vegetable container gardening to grow up to 5 plants in a gallon container. This method of vegetable planting will give you plenty of lettuce for your salad.

What better compliment to your lettuce than cucumbers? Some sources say you should only plant one cucumber plant per gallon container, while others say two plants are fine. You can experiment with your vegetable container gardening techniques until you find the perfect balance.
